Our Story
The M Store was launched in 2010 as an off-campus alternative source for adult Griz apparel. That expanded to include youth, toddler, and infant clothing, along with gift and home items and many novelties that comprise the store you love to visit today. Taking our name from the M that sits 620 vertical feet high on Mount Sentinel overlooking Missoula and the University of Montana, we strive to provide products and service as recognizable as this treasured icon.
Carl and Annette Rummel purchased the M Store in 2015, having strong roots in Missoula and Montana. Carl is a 4th-generation Montanan from a Bitterroot ranching family and came to Missoula in 1972 to attend the University of Montana, graduating in 1976. Annette is a 2nd-generation Montanan from a Butte mining family, moving to Missoula in 1995. Their six children were born in Montana, and their parents and grandparents are buried here.
In 2021, after 6 years of bleeding Maroon and Silver daily as the owners of the M Store, Carl and Annette retired and sold the M Store to the Montana-not-for-profit company that also oversees MSU Bookstore, Inc. Finding common ground in their shared mission to lower the cost of education in the state of Montana, The Rummels and MSU Bookstore look forward to the M Store continuing the tradition of being a proud sponsor of all things Griz.
The M Store is at the intersection of Higgins and Broadway in downtown Missoula, just a stone's throw from the University of Montana campus, and we are an "official partner" of Grizzly Athletics. THE pre-game gathering spot for Griz Nation on football game days, The M Store is a destination EVERY day for all your Griz needs! In addition to our main retail location, you’ll find us on gamedays on the west side of Wa-Griz stadium, at our booth in the tailgating area, and at the ESPN pre-game show.
We carry a diverse product line including Nike, Champion, UScape, Antigua, Blue 84, Yeti and more. As a local business, we also find it important to feature Montana-owned companies including Wear Your Roots, Smash ‘Em Sports, The Huckleberry People, Clearlake, Design to Print, Hamilton Group and other companies. In addition, we are proud to feature Missoula’s only Apple Authorized Campus Store and Apple Authorized Repair Center, serving all your technology needs. We are constantly seeking out new vendors, and our selections change frequently to enhance your shopping experience.
